Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has declared a statewide emergency as multiple wildfires continue to spread across the state amid severe drought, high temperatures and strong winds. He also announced a statewide ban on most outdoor and agricultural burning through September 30 to reduce the risk of new fires.
Officials warned that Eastern Washington is facing extreme wildfire conditions under a rare “particularly dangerous situation” Red Flag Alert. Several fast-moving fires near Spokane are threatening homes and communities, prompting authorities to urge residents to monitor evacuation orders and avoid activities that could spark additional fires.
Among the largest wildfires, the Modrite Fire has burned more than 40,000 acres and is 22% contained, while the Little Giant Fire has grown to over 28,000 acres. More than 1,000 fires have scorched about 425,000 acres across Washington this year, with over 200,000 acres currently burning in 12 major fires.
The emergency declaration allows the state to access additional firefighting resources through national mutual aid agreements and authorizes more National Guard deployments. Officials also reminded residents to follow burn restrictions, avoid fire hazards, and rely on official updates as crews continue battling the wildfires.
