Washington has joined a coalition of 20 states in a lawsuit against the Trump administration, pushing back against newly implemented federal rules that could restrict access to vital public benefit programs.
The states argue that recent policy changes unlawfully require immigration and citizenship documentation from individuals seeking health care, education support, and other social services — regardless of their legal status.
Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown voiced strong opposition to the new rules, warning that they pose a serious threat to funding and accessibility for essential services that many low-income families and vulnerable communities rely on.
“These changes put critical programs at risk for the very people who need them most,” said Brown. “They undermine our ability to provide basic support to families across Washington.”
The legal action, filed earlier this month, seeks immediate judicial intervention to block enforcement of the federal mandate. The coalition contends that the administration’s requirements violate constitutional principles by introducing new restrictions without sufficient warning, legal authority, or consent from the states.
The challenged policy has already gone into effect, raising concerns among advocates and service providers about potential disruptions in care and assistance for thousands.
