At the Cedar River Terrace apartments in the 100 Block of Burnett Avenue South, a woman was found to have been stabbed to death and a Renton police officer was discovered to be seriously injured late Monday night, a senior housing complex where residents must be at least 62 to live.
Officers arrived just before midnight after several 911 callers reported the sound of breaking glass and other disturbances. They found the building’s front glass doors shattered and a man nearby who ran on sight. During the pursuit the man struggled with officers and allegedly stabbed one in the face with a knife. Officers used a Taser to take the 42-year-old into custody. The injured officer was taken to a hospital in serious condition, and his status has not been updated.
After the arrest, officers followed a trail of blood to a room on the third floor, where they found a woman dead of stab wounds. Renton police have described the incident as isolated, which the department uses to indicate a possible targeted attack rather than a random one, though some residents in the area said the language did little to reassure them.
Detectives are working to establish what connection, if any, existed between the man in custody and the woman, who lived at the complex. Neither has been publicly identified, and no charges have been announced. The Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory is assisting the Renton Police Department, which has said the investigation is continuing.
