Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Brent Jones has announced his decision to step down this fall, marking the end of his tenure as the leader of Washington’s largest public school district.

In a message to families on Monday morning, Jones shared that his departure follows “much reflection and heartfelt conversations.” His last day in office will be September 3.

“It’s been an honor to serve as superintendent of Seattle Public Schools and to give back to the community that shaped me,” Jones said in a video statement. “I take pride in the progress that we’ve made together and remain committed to supporting our students, educators, and families during this transition.”

Jones, who took over as interim superintendent in 2021 before being officially appointed in 2022, has navigated the district through significant challenges, including the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and a persistent budget crisis. The district faces an estimated $100 million shortfall for the next fiscal year.

In his remaining months, Jones plans to focus on balancing the district’s budget while advocating for increased state funding for Seattle schools and other districts across Washington. He has also pledged to assist in the search for his successor.

His departure comes shortly after the Seattle School Board extended his contract by an additional year, through June 2027.
