King County Metro to Resume Fare Enforcement on March 31, Aiming for Compliance Through Verbal Reminders

King County Metro will reinstate fare enforcement on its buses and streetcars starting March 31, with officers conducting proof-of-payment checks and offering verbal reminders to riders who have not paid their fares.

Under the updated approach, fare enforcement officers will focus on education and compliance rather than immediate penalties. Passengers found without proof of payment will receive a “friendly verbal reminder” instead of an immediate citation. The goal is to encourage adherence to fare policies while maintaining a more equitable and customer-friendly approach to enforcement.

King County Metro had previously suspended fare enforcement due to concerns about equity and the impact on marginalized communities. The upcoming reinstatement comes as part of a broader effort to ensure fair ridership while avoiding punitive measures that disproportionately affect low-income individuals.

Further details on enforcement protocols, potential penalties for repeat violations, and how Metro plans to address fare evasion in the long term are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
