Seattle Concessions Inc., a concessions provider at Climate Pledge Arena, has reached a settlement with the Seattle Office of Labor Standards (OLS) following an investigation into multiple labor violations. The company will pay a total of $353,280.76 in back wages, interest, liquidated damages, and civil penalties to 685 affected employees, along with an additional $1,164.28 in fines to the City of Seattle.

The investigation revealed that the company failed to comply with several local labor ordinances, including the Wage Theft Ordinance, Secure Scheduling Ordinance, and Paid Sick and Safe Time (PSST) regulations. Violations included failure to provide mandatory rest breaks and compensation for certain employer-initiated schedule changes, which are required under the Secure Scheduling Ordinance. Additionally, Seattle Concessions Inc. did not properly inform employees of their rights under the PSST policy.

Commenting on the importance of workplace rights, affected worker Orion Penn urged employees to advocate for themselves. “It’s important for workers to stand up for their rights because so many don’t. So many are afraid and so many can’t afford to lose their jobs, but they definitely need to and know that they are supported and protected,” Penn said in a statement obtained by the City of Seattle.

OLS Director Steven Marchese emphasized the significance of labor protections in ensuring fair working conditions. “Seattle’s labor standards, like Wage Theft, Paid Sick and Safe Time, and Secure Scheduling, are designed to safeguard all workers, including those in the service industry,” Marchese stated. He further stressed the importance of these protections in preventing retaliation, ensuring stable employment, and promoting livable wages.

The OLS offers resources for both workers and employers to understand and comply with labor regulations. Employees seeking assistance or wishing to file a complaint can contact the OLS, while businesses can access city-provided guidance to ensure compliance with labor laws.
