Seattle police are investigating an early morning burglary incident in which a local resident shot a suspected intruder in the leg at an apartment complex near 21st Avenue and Yesler Way.

According to the Seattle Police Department (SPD), the incident occurred just before 1:30 a.m. on Friday, when officers and Seattle Fire Department medics were dispatched to the scene following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, first responders found a 28-year-old male suspect with a gunshot wound to the leg. Medics provided treatment at the scene before transporting him to Harborview Medical Center, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say the shooting occurred after the suspect allegedly broke through an exterior door of the apartment building and attempted to force entry into multiple units. He ultimately targeted one apartment, where a man, his wife, and their young child were inside.

Police report that the resident issued multiple verbal warnings as the suspect pounded on the door and shouted. When the intruder eventually breached the door, the resident fired a single shot through it, striking the suspect in the leg.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident. No charges have been filed against the resident as of Friday morning, and the investigation is ongoing.

This incident adds to the growing conversation around self-defense and public safety in Seattle neighborhoods, particularly in the Central District.

Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact Seattle Police.
