A 34-year-old man was arrested Friday night after allegedly aiming an AR-15 rifle at a Thurston County Sheriff’s deputy during a tense standoff in the Rainier area.
At approximately 8 p.m., deputies and Sheriff Derek Sanders were investigating a vehicle linked to a reported domestic disturbance. The driver was suspected of being intoxicated, armed, and possibly suicidal. Deputies located the vehicle near the 15000 block of Vail Cut Off Road Southeast.
While engaging with family members at the scene, the suspect emerged unexpectedly from behind a structure, wearing body armor and brandishing a loaded AR-15 rifle. He also had a holstered handgun and additional ammunition magazines attached to a duty belt.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the suspect aimed the rifle at the deputy from a close distance, with a family member positioned between them. In response, the family member intervened, pushing the rifle away, which led to a physical altercation. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
In addition to the AR-15, deputies discovered a loaded AK-47 rifle inside the suspect’s vehicle. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon.
Sheriff Sanders expressed gratitude for the swift and courageous actions of the family member, stating, “We are extremely grateful for the safety of our deputy, the family, and the quick intervention and assistance from the family member who certainly saved numerous lives tonight.”
