A 24-year-old woman from Quincy, Washington, tragically drowned on May 20, 2025, after her car plunged into an irrigation canal. The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. when the vehicle, driven by Erika Martinez Chavez, veered off Road 7 Northwest near Quincy. Authorities from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office quickly responded to the scene after being notified that the car had become submerged in the canal.

According to the sheriff’s office, a helicopter pilot flying over the area spotted the vehicle in the canal and immediately alerted emergency responders. By the time first responders arrived, they were unable to save Martinez Chavez, who was found deceased in the vehicle. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, but officials have indicated that it may have been caused by the car losing control on the narrow, unpaved section of the road that runs along the canal.

The scene was described as chaotic, with the canal water making rescue efforts particularly difficult. First responders, including personnel from the Quincy Police Department and local emergency services, worked quickly to recover the car and ensure no one else was involved in the accident. The canal, a vital irrigation source for the region, is known to be deep and fast-flowing, which made the rescue attempt particularly challenging.

Martinez Chavez was the sole occupant of the car at the time of the accident. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office has yet to release further details about her background, and an official autopsy is pending. Local authorities have pledged to continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, focusing on the condition of the road and whether any contributing factors, such as weather conditions or mechanical failure, played a role in the incident.

The accident has left the Quincy community in shock, as Martinez Chavez was known locally. The tragedy highlights ongoing concerns over the safety of rural roads in Grant County, particularly those that run alongside irrigation canals. Many have called for enhanced road safety measures, including better signage and barriers along these canals, to prevent similar accidents in the future.

In the wake of the accident, local officials have offered condolences to the family and friends of Martinez Chavez. The investigation into the cause of the crash is still ongoing, with more details expected to be released in the coming days. In the meantime, the community is left to mourn the loss of a young woman in a heartbreaking and entirely preventable tragedy.
