A 23-year-old man accused of shooting a Lummi Nation police officer Monday morning has been charged with attempted murder. Jesus Abraham Penuelas-Agramon, a fugitive from Colorado, faces multiple charges including possession of fentanyl and money laundering.

The officer, 37, remains in stable condition after undergoing two surgeries and being placed in a medically induced coma. Body camera footage shows the suspect’s truck overturned in a ditch around 1 a.m. Monday. The officer approached to offer help when Penuelas-Agramon emerged and opened fire.

According to charging documents, the suspect fired 10 shots from a stolen gun, striking the officer seven times in the legs and stomach. One bullet grazed the officer’s head, and a shot to his chest was stopped by his bulletproof vest.

After the shooting, Penuelas-Agramon fled to a friend’s house and was later stopped by police under a false name. He was arrested the next day at his girlfriend’s home.

Whatcom County Sheriff Donnell Tanksley described the attack as an “evil” act and urged the community to support first responders.

The officer is married with children. In court, his wife called the suspect a “coward” who tried to take away not just a police officer but a father, husband, and friend.
