A car crash into Rainier Health and Fitness on Sunday evening caused more than $50,000 in damage to the south Seattle nonprofit gym, forcing a brief closure before community support helped the facility reopen.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. when a vehicle traveling on Rainier Avenue South crashed into the longtime community gym after narrowly avoiding another car. Surveillance footage shows the driver appeared uninjured and exited the vehicle moments after impact.
The crash destroyed part of an exterior wall, damaged structural framing, and forced removal of an exit door. Costly exercise equipment on the other side of the wall also sustained damage. No serious injuries were reported, and Seattle police are investigating the incident.
“The unthinkable actually happened,” said Alicia Haskins, director of Rainier Health and Fitness. “The other thing is how are we going to afford the repairs as a nonprofit.” The facility has served the Rainier Valley community for more than 20 years.
Despite the substantial damage, staff and volunteers worked quickly to clean up debris and reopened the facility by Tuesday. The rapid response demonstrates the organization’s commitment to maintaining services for community members who rely on the affordable fitness facility.
Member Kim Powers described the crash as traumatic but praised the community response. “It’s kind of a home. You can come down here and exercise, and everybody rallied, of course, because that’s what happens when you have a really good community center,” she said.
The nonprofit briefly closed following the crash but prioritized getting members back into the facility as quickly as possible. Staff estimate repair costs will exceed $50,000 for building repairs and equipment replacement.
Haskins expressed gratitude for the community support the nonprofit has received and confidence that local residents will help them through the financial challenges. “Ultimately, it’s a thank you for your support. Thank you for your concern, and we’ll get through even this together,” she said.
The facility’s importance extends beyond fitness services, functioning as a community hub that provides affordable health and wellness resources in the Rainier Valley area. The quick reopening reflects both organizational resilience and strong community investment in preserving this neighborhood resource.
