The Seattle Mariners dropped further behind division leaders Houston after a 2-1 extra-inning defeat to the Oakland Athletics at T-Mobile Park on Saturday night.

Shea Langeliers delivered the decisive blow with a two-out RBI double in the 10th inning, scoring automatic runner Colby Thomas to secure the victory for Oakland.

The Athletics managed just five hits but capitalised on key moments to claim the win.

Oakland struck first in the fourth inning when Darell Hernaiz drove in Jacob Wilson with a single. Seattle responded in the sixth as Randy Arozarena launched his career-best 24th home run, surpassing his previous high of 23 set in 2023 with Tampa Bay.

The defeat leaves the Mariners three games behind first-place Houston in the American League West, though they maintain a three-game advantage over Kansas City for the final wild-card position.

The loss compounds Seattle’s recent struggles as they attempt to secure their first playoff berth since 2001.

Tyler Ferguson earned the victory for Oakland, pitching 1⅓ hitless innings in relief. Hogan Harris secured his second save despite inheriting a bases-loaded situation in the 10th, getting Randy Arozarena to ground into a game-ending force play.

Five Athletics pitchers combined to limit Seattle to just three hits, demonstrating the pitching depth that has kept Oakland competitive despite modest offensive production.

Wilson led Oakland with two hits in his second game back from a 23-game injury absence.

Victor Robles made his return to the Mariners lineup after activation from the 60-day injured list, starting in right field whilst appealing a 10-game suspension related to a minor league incident. He managed one hit in four at-bats.

The game was played in 84-degree temperatures, the hottest conditions at T-Mobile Park since July 2023. The heat may have contributed to both teams’ offensive struggles, with Seattle managing just three hits against Oakland’s pitching staff.

Sunday’s series finale features left-hander Jacob Lopez (7-6, 3.28 ERA) for Oakland against Seattle’s Logan Gilbert (3-5, 3.83 ERA) as both teams look to conclude their season series.
