Federal agents arrested a teenager and recovered multiple firearms after investigating social media threats targeting a Washington DC public school, preventing what authorities described as a potential mass shooting incident.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Metro Transit Police Department launched the investigation following “alarming” social media posts referencing threats against an unnamed DC public school. The incident occurred one day after a mass shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school heightened national concerns about school violence.

On August 27, federal agents and Metro Transit Police executed a search warrant at a District residence, recovering multiple firearms and taking a teenager into custody. Authorities have not disclosed the specific school targeted or released details about the nature of the social media threats.

“As part of our participation in a longstanding ATF task force, we’re proud of our officers who disrupted this significant public safety threat,” said a Metro Transit Police spokesperson. “We are focused on keeping our Metro system and community safe across the region.”

DC Public Schools officials indicated the arrested individual was not previously known to district authorities. “We’re not currently tracking that any DC Public Schools students have been apprehended in relation to this incident,” a DCPS spokesperson confirmed.

The arrest highlights the role of social media monitoring in preventing potential school violence. Law enforcement agencies increasingly track online platforms for threats against educational institutions, particularly following high-profile mass shooting incidents.

The timing of the arrest, coming just one day after the Minneapolis school shooting, underscores the heightened alert status among federal agencies regarding potential copycat incidents. Mass shooting events often trigger increased security measures and investigation of similar threats nationwide.

Federal involvement through the ATF indicates the seriousness with which authorities treated the threats. The agency typically becomes involved in cases involving illegal firearms possession or trafficking, suggesting the recovered weapons may have violated federal firearms laws.

Metro Transit Police participation in the investigation reflects the interconnected nature of regional security efforts, with transportation authorities playing roles in broader public safety initiatives beyond their traditional transit-focused responsibilities.

The case remains under investigation, with officials declining to provide additional details about the suspect’s identity, motivation, or the specific nature of the recovered firearms. The investigation will likely examine how the teenager obtained the weapons and whether other individuals were involved in planning potential violence.
