A 43-year-old man drowned whilst attempting to evade police at Gene Coulon Beach Park on Saturday afternoon, whilst his female companion was arrested after being pulled from the water.

Renton Police Department officers responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle at the lakeside park shortly after noon on August 30. Upon arrival, a man and woman exited the vehicle and fled into the water to avoid law enforcement contact.

Officers successfully rescued the woman from the lake and took her into custody. However, the man slipped beneath the surface and drowned despite emergency response efforts.

Authorities have classified the incident as an in-custody death, triggering mandatory independent investigation protocols. The Valley Independent Investigative Team will conduct a thorough review, with Kent Police Department serving as the primary investigative agency.

The drowning represents one of three water-related fatalities that occurred across Puget Sound waterways during the weekend. At Lake Tapps, a 55-year-old man died Saturday afternoon after receiving CPR, whilst two people were rescued from Lake Sammamish and hospitalised.

Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park serves as a popular recreational destination on the southern shore of Lake Washington, featuring swimming areas, boat launches, and walking trails. The park typically attracts families and recreational users, particularly during warm weekend weather.

Police pursuits involving water present unique challenges for law enforcement officers, who must balance public safety concerns with rescue responsibilities when suspects flee into dangerous environments. Officers are trained to assess risks associated with water pursuits, though such situations can escalate rapidly.

The circumstances leading to the initial suspicious vehicle report have not been disclosed by authorities. Police have not indicated whether criminal charges were pending against either individual or what prompted their decision to flee into the water.

Independent investigation of in-custody deaths ensures objective review of law enforcement actions and circumstances surrounding such incidents. The Valley Independent Investigative Team includes representatives from multiple agencies to maintain impartiality during the review process.

The drowning highlights risks associated with attempting to evade police through water escape, particularly in lakes where depth, temperature, and swimming ability can quickly become fatal factors for fleeing suspects.

Further details about the investigation timeline and findings will be released as the review progresses through the independent investigative process.
