The U.S. Coast Guard is conducting an active search operation for two people missing after their catamaran capsized on the Rogue River in Oregon.

Three individuals were aboard the vessel when it overturned. A Good Samaritan rescued one person who was transported to Gold Beach, whilst two passengers remain unaccounted for in the water.

Coast Guard crews from Air Station North Bend and Station Chetco River are participating in the search efforts. The operation involves both aerial and marine assets combing the river area where the capsizing occurred.

The Rogue River, known for its challenging currents and rocky terrain, presents hazardous conditions for both recreational boaters and rescue operations. Weather conditions and water temperature can significantly impact survival rates for individuals in the water for extended periods.

Catamaran capsizing incidents can occur due to various factors including sudden weather changes, operator error, or mechanical failure. The twin-hulled design typically provides stability, but rough conditions or improper handling can lead to dangerous situations.

Coast Guard search and rescue operations follow established protocols that prioritise areas where survivors are most likely to be found based on current patterns, weather conditions, and time elapsed since the incident. The agency coordinates with local emergency responders and utilises specialised equipment for water rescues.

The successful rescue of one passenger provides hope that the missing individuals may also survive if they managed to reach shore or find floating debris. However, prolonged exposure to river conditions poses serious hypothermia and drowning risks.

Search operations typically continue until authorities determine that survival prospects have diminished beyond reasonable expectations, though specific timelines depend on environmental factors and available resources.

The Coast Guard has not released information about the identities of those involved or the specific circumstances that led to the capsizing. The investigation will likely examine factors including weather conditions, vessel maintenance, and operator experience.
