A man accidentally shot himself in the chest early Thursday morning when bystanders attempted to disarm him after he threatened people with a gun on Capitol Hill.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on East Pike Street, where witnesses told police the man was causing a disturbance and waving a gun at people. Multiple individuals stepped in to disarm the suspect, leading to a scuffle during which the weapon discharged.

Seattle police responded and provided medical aid until Seattle Fire Department paramedics arrived. The suspect was transported to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.

Another person involved in the confrontation was also hospitalised for injuries sustained during the altercation, though police confirmed this individual was not shot.

The suspect was arrested on harassment charges and remains under armed guard at the hospital. He will be booked into King County Jail when discharged.

Police have not disclosed what prompted the initial disturbance or released the suspect’s identity. The investigation continues.
