A 44-year-old father fatally shot one child and wounded two others at a Port Huron, Michigan residence Thursday morning before family members physically stopped the attack, police reported.
Officers responded to multiple 911 calls at 6:10 a.m. September 11 reporting gunshot victims in the north Port Huron neighborhood, located approximately 60 miles northeast of Detroit. Police discovered three children with gunshot wounds: ages 12, 13, and 17.
The 17-year-old victim was pronounced dead, while the two younger children remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Authorities arrested the father at the scene following the domestic violence incident.
The children’s mother and a 20-year-old sibling were present during the shooting and physically wrestled with the father, forcing him to cease the attack, police said.
Law enforcement has not disclosed potential motives for the violence, describing the situation only as “a domestic-related incident.” The suspect cooperated with investigators following his arrest and provided statements about the events.
Police confirmed they will pursue criminal charges against the father, though specific charges have not been announced pending the ongoing investigation.
The incident adds to national concerns about domestic violence involving firearms, particularly cases where children become victims of family violence. Domestic homicides involving multiple family members represent some of the most devastating forms of interpersonal violence.
Emergency medical personnel transported all three wounded children to area hospitals, where medical teams worked to stabilize the victims. The survival of two children suggests rapid emergency response and medical intervention.
The case underscores the critical role of immediate family intervention in stopping ongoing violence, as the mother and adult sibling’s physical confrontation with the armed father likely prevented additional casualties.
Port Huron police continue investigating the circumstances leading to the shooting while coordinating with prosecutors to determine appropriate charges. The community faces the aftermath of a tragedy that has shattered one family and affected the broader neighborhood.
