Three police officers were fatally shot and two others wounded Wednesday in southern Pennsylvania while conducting a follow-up domestic violence investigation, prompting Governor Josh Shapiro to rush to the scene.
The shooting occurred in North Codorus Township, approximately 115 miles west of Philadelphia near the Maryland border, during what authorities described as a continuation of a domestic-related investigation that began the previous day.
“We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country,” Governor Shapiro said at the scene. “This kind of violence is not OK, we need to do better as a society.”
The suspected shooter was killed by police during the incident, though authorities have not released the identities of the officers, the suspect, or specific details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Christopher Paris acknowledged the tragedy’s impact during a news conference. “The grief will be unbearable but we will bear it,” Paris said. “We will not rest until we conduct a full, fair and competent investigation into this matter.”
York Hospital confirmed it was treating two people in serious condition and had implemented enhanced security protocols following the incident.
Officials could not share many investigative details due to the ongoing nature of the case, Paris explained. Attorney General Pamela Bondi called the violence against police “a scourge on our society” and confirmed federal agents were supporting local law enforcement at the scene.
Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis requested public prayers for those affected, posting on social media: “Please send prayers to the officers and those involved in the shooting in York County.”
Local schools implemented shelter-in-place procedures as a precautionary measure, though authorities confirmed educational facilities and students were not involved in the shooting. The district advised that authorities “advised us to hold students and staff in our buildings as a precaution while several area roads are closed.” The order was lifted later in the afternoon.
The incident unfolded in rural agricultural area characterized by farms, barns, and crop fields. Emergency responders blocked access with approximately 30 police vehicles, establishing a wide perimeter around the scene bordered by goat farms and soybean and corn fields.
Multiple agencies responded to the emergency, including Pennsylvania State Police, Northern Regional Police, and numerous emergency responders. York County Commissioners released a statement saying they were “monitoring the situation closely and praying for all those involved.”
The shooting recalls a February incident in the area when an armed man took hospital staff hostage in an intensive care unit, resulting in a fatal shootout that killed both the suspect and a police officer.
