Houthi Drone Breaches Israeli Defenses, Injures 22 in Eilat as Gaza Violence Continues

A Houthi drone attack wounded 22 people in the southern Israeli city of Eilat Wednesday, representing a rare penetration of Israel’s sophisticated air defense systems amid ongoing regional conflict.

The Iran-backed Yemeni rebels launched two drones at Israel in what they characterized as support for Palestinians, with one successfully evading interception attempts. Most Houthi projectiles targeting Israel are typically intercepted or fall harmlessly in unpopulated areas.

Magen David Adom rescue services transported the wounded to hospitals, with two suffering severe shrapnel injuries to their limbs. The successful drone strike demonstrates vulnerabilities in defensive systems that have largely protected Israeli territory from regional missile and drone attacks.

Defense Minister Israel Katz warned of retaliation on social media, stating “anyone who harms Israel will be harmed sevenfold,” following Israel’s pattern of conducting retaliatory airstrikes on Yemen after previous Houthi attacks.

Simultaneously, Israeli military operations in Gaza killed at least 41 Palestinians Wednesday, according to local hospitals. A strike on displacement tents in Gaza City killed 22 people, including three children and nine women, according to Dr. Fadel Naim, director of Al-Ahli hospital.

The Israeli military stated it targeted two Hamas militants using precision munitions while implementing civilian protection measures. Israel attributes civilian casualties to Hamas embedding operations within densely populated areas.

Additional strikes hit Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing at least 12 people and wounding 18, according to Al-Awda Hospital. A separate strike killed four family members, including two children, in their Nuseirat home.

Nasser Hospital reported receiving three bodies of Palestinians killed by gunfire while seeking humanitarian aid. UN human rights officials and Gaza health authorities report hundreds killed by Israeli fire during aid distribution in recent months.

In the West Bank, Israeli forces killed a 24-year-old Palestinian near Jenin after he allegedly threw an explosive device at soldiers, according to military statements.

The violence occurred as Middle East diplomatic efforts intensified at the UN General Assembly. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump negotiator Steve Witkoff expressed optimism about a “Trump 21-point plan for peace” presented to Arab leaders Tuesday.

“We had a very productive session,” Witkoff said at a New York conference. “I think it addresses Israeli concerns, as well as the concerns of all the neighbors in the region.”

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi characterized the proposals as “an important foundation upon which we can build further in the coming period to achieve peace.”

Previous ceasefire negotiations involving the US, Egypt, and Qatar suffered setbacks when Israel conducted airstrikes targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar earlier this month.

The Gaza conflict began October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants killed approximately 1,200 Israelis and captured 251 hostages. Forty-eight captives remain in Gaza, with around 20 believed alive.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed over 65,000 people according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which reports women and children comprise roughly half the fatalities. The ministry operates under Hamas governance, though UN agencies consider its casualty figures reliable.

Israel launched another major Gaza City operation this month in areas experts describe as experiencing famine conditions, displacing over 300,000 people while up to 700,000 remain unable to relocate.
