An 82-year-old woman who fatally shot her husband at a nursing home left behind a cryptic note, with investigators now believing the shooting was premeditated.

Harriet Kay Recker was accused of fatally shooting her husband, 81-year-old Dennis Recker, at a care facility on Hilton Head Island on September 12. New details are emerging, with deputies saying they believe the shooting was premeditated.

The conclusion was made following interviews with witnesses and family members, as well as the discovery of financial documents and several notes.

Prior to the shooting, Dennis Recker had been admitted to the Preston Health Center due to medical issues requiring extra care. A neighbor drove Harriet Recker to the facility and was walking the couple to a room when they noticed they needed an extra chair.

After the neighbor left the room to retrieve another chair, they said they heard a loud noise, then returned to find Harriet Recker holding a revolver. A witness told authorities that Dennis Recker appeared surprised at what happened and said, “She shot me.”

Life-saving measures were taken at the scene, but the victim ultimately died.

Deputies said Harriet Recker asked for an attorney, but reportedly said that it was a sad situation and that “he was a good man.” Authorities discovered a note inside the suspect’s purse, with an identical note being found among financial documents at her home.

An investigator read part of the note in court. It reads:

“To you all this has just been too much for me, I so wish I could do it with the wonderful family we have, so many good friends. We can’t have a life without someone and that someone can’t be me as I am not strong enough or smart enough to do all this.”

After the hearing, a judge found probable cause and sent the case to a grand jury.

Harriet Kay Recker is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. She was taken to the Beaufort County Jail and is being held without bond.

The note’s cryptic language suggests Harriet Recker may have been overwhelmed by caregiving responsibilities or financial pressures related to her husband’s medical care, though her exact motivations remain unclear. The phrase “can’t have a life without someone” could indicate dependency concerns or fear of being unable to manage alone.

The discovery of identical notes in both her purse and among financial documents at home supports investigators’ belief that the shooting was planned rather than spontaneous, suggesting she prepared the notes in advance and brought one with her to the facility.

Dennis Recker’s apparent surprise at being shot, saying “She shot me”, suggests he did not anticipate the violence despite any relationship difficulties the couple may have experienced.

The case highlights the strain that long-term caregiving and medical costs can place on elderly couples, though such circumstances rarely result in violence. Elder caregivers often experience depression, anxiety, and burnout, particularly when managing complex medical needs and financial pressures.
