Police arrested a homicide suspect Monday after a fatal stabbing at a townhome in Milton, Washington, that left one woman dead and another facing murder charges.
Officers responded about 1:47 p.m. to a 911 call reporting a stabbing in progress at a set of townhomes on 24th Avenue Court, near Edgewood.
The caller said they witnessed one woman stab another inside the residence and ran to a neighboring unit to call for help.
Police detained a woman who opened the door for officers covered in blood. She was quickly identified as the suspect.
Officers then found an unresponsive adult woman inside the residence with apparent stab wounds.
Officers and medics attempted life-saving measures, but the 40-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the suspect and the victim knew each other, though the motive for the stabbing remains under investigation.
The suspect, a woman in her 30s, was booked into the Pierce County Jail on a charge of second-degree murder.
The witness who called 911 after seeing the stabbing in progress showed remarkable presence of mind by fleeing to safety before calling for help rather than intervening directly. Witnesses to violent crimes face split-second decisions about whether to try to stop attacks or to seek help from authorities.
The 1:47 p.m. timing places the stabbing in the middle of a Monday afternoon when many residents would have been at work, potentially limiting the number of witnesses. However, the caller’s ability to see the stabbing suggests proximity to the incident, possibly through a window or open door.
The suspect answering the door covered in blood indicates she either didn’t flee after the stabbing or had nowhere to go. Many suspects in domestic violence homicides remain at the scene, sometimes in shock over what they’ve done or resigned to arrest.
The second-degree murder charge rather than first-degree suggests prosecutors don’t believe the killing was premeditated. Second-degree murder in Washington involves intentional killing without premeditation, killing someone during certain felonies, or showing extreme indifference to human life.
The fact that the suspect and victim knew each other eliminates random violence and suggests a personal dispute. Domestic violence, roommate conflicts, or relationship issues could all be factors, though investigators haven’t specified the nature of their relationship.
The 40-year-old victim’s age suggests a woman in the middle of her life, possibly with children, a career, and family who now must process her sudden violent death. The holidays approaching make the timing particularly cruel for those who loved her.
The life-saving measures attempted by officers and medics indicate the victim was still alive when first responders arrived, though her injuries proved fatal. Stab wounds to vital organs or major blood vessels can cause death within minutes despite medical intervention.
The townhome setting suggests close quarters where neighbors live in proximity to each other. The witness who saw the stabbing likely lived in an adjacent unit with shared walls or facing windows, making the violence impossible to ignore.
