Seattle police detectives are investigating after a 27-year-old man shot his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend who forced his way into their apartment and assaulted him Wednesday night.

Patrol officers responded at 6:29 p.m. to a shooting in the 3800 block of South Angeline Street. Officers found a 33-year-old man outside with a gunshot wound to his chest. Police and firefighters provided medical aid before medics transported him to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.

The 27-year-old shooter called 911 shortly after the incident and reported his involvement. Police found him nearby, arrested him, and recovered his firearm. Officers took him to Seattle Police Department headquarters where Gun Violence Reduction Unit detectives interviewed him.

Detectives determined the 33-year-old forced his way into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and assaulted her new boyfriend, the armed 27-year-old. The shooter then fired in what detectives described as self-defense.

Police released the shooter from custody after completing their interview. The case remains open and active with the Gun Violence Reduction Unit.
