A 27-year-old woman died Monday evening after being struck by a vehicle in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, marking the city’s first traffic fatality of the year.

Seattle Fire Department crews responded at 8:05 p.m. to East Pine Street and Bellevue Avenue following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian. Firefighters found the woman trapped under a vehicle and upgraded the call to a rescue extrication.

Additional units freed her from beneath the vehicle. Firefighters attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Seattle Fire Department then turned the scene over to Seattle police.

The driver cooperated with investigators. No arrests had been made as of 10:29 p.m., according to Seattle police.

Emergency crews closed surrounding streets while working the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
