A hit-and-run driver caused a chain-reaction crash on southbound Interstate 5 near SeaTac early Sunday that killed a 72-year-old woman and closed the highway for more than four hours as investigators searched for the fleeing motorist.

The collision happened at 3:15 a.m. on southbound I-5 at 200th Street when a driver struck another vehicle and fled the scene, according to the Washington State Patrol. The impact disabled the victim’s car, leaving it perpendicular across lane 5. A third driver then struck the disabled vehicle, killing the 72-year-old woman at the scene.

The driver of the third car was injured and taken to the hospital. Troopers blocked the roadway for approximately four hours and 15 minutes while investigating the crash and clearing wreckage.

The Washington State Patrol is searching for the hit-and-run driver who caused the initial collision. Authorities have not released information about whether witnesses provided a vehicle description or whether surveillance cameras captured identifying details. Troopers are asking anyone with information to contact investigators.

The early morning crash continues a troubling pattern of fatal collisions on Interstate 5 through South King County, where high speeds and reduced visibility during overnight hours create dangerous conditions. The fleeing driver could face vehicular homicide charges in addition to hit-and-run if apprehended.
