Seattle is rolling out new safety measures at some of its busiest waterfront parks this summer, including the deployment of private security officers and updated seasonal hours, as the city works to address ongoing concerns about late-night activity, noise, and large unruly gatherings.
Seattle Parks and Recreation will station private security officers at Golden Gardens Park from May through September, primarily during late-night hours. Officials say the added presence will serve as eyes and ears on the ground at a time when the department continues to operate with limited park ranger staffing. The security officers are intended to monitor activity and support faster responses when situations arise, bridging a gap that has left some of the city’s most heavily used parks without adequate oversight during peak evening hours.
Seasonal closing hours take effect on 1 May, with Golden Gardens and Magnuson Park both closing at 10:30 p.m. Beach fires will return to designated fire pits on 22 May, with all fires required to be fully extinguished by 10 p.m., giving visitors roughly two and a half hours of fire time before the parks close.
The measures are part of a broader summer safety plan targeting high-traffic parks across the city. Seattle officials say the goal is to strike a balance between maintaining open and welcoming public spaces and responding to the legitimate concerns of nearby residents who have raised issues about noise, crowds, and after-hours activity in recent seasons.
