A 29-year-old Everett man whose car was struck by a school bus on northbound I-5 near Marysville Tuesday morning died in the hospital from his injuries.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the man was stopped in the HOV lane when the bus collided with his car. The bus driver, a 59-year-old Everett woman, was also injured and taken to the hospital. Her condition was not immediately available. No children were on the bus at the time of the crash.

The collision occurred just south of SR 529 near milepost 197, according to the Washington Department of Transportation. Three left lanes, including the HOV lane, were shut down Tuesday morning following the crash. Emergency responders worked to clear the scene and assist the injured. All lanes have since reopened.

Washington State Patrol is investigating the circumstances that led to the collision. Investigators are working to determine why the victim’s vehicle was stopped in the HOV lane and whether mechanical issues, medical emergency, or other factors contributed to the crash. Troopers are also examining whether visibility, road conditions, or other environmental factors played a role in the bus driver’s inability to avoid the stopped vehicle.

The school bus was traveling without passengers at the time of impact, likely either en route to pick up students or returning from dropping them off. The collision underscores ongoing concerns about traffic safety on I-5, particularly in areas where vehicles become disabled or stopped unexpectedly in travel lanes.
