A family member cleaning out a deceased relative’s home uncovered a homemade pipe bomb Tuesday evening, prompting a bomb squad response in unincorporated Kitsap County.
The discovery occurred around 5:30 p.m. as the woman sorted through belongings at the residence in the 3000 block of Nipsic Avenue Northeast. She found the 4-inch device concealed under a bed, wrapped in tape with a fuse attached to one end, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities immediately contacted the Washington State Patrol Interagency Bomb Squad, which X-rayed the device to assess its contents. The examination revealed powder consistent with explosive materials, confirming the device posed a genuine threat.
The bomb squad safely removed and disposed of the explosive device. No injuries were reported, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The incident highlights the potential dangers families may encounter when clearing deceased relatives’ properties. Law enforcement agencies recommend contacting authorities immediately if suspicious items are discovered rather than attempting to handle them independently.
