A pedestrian was killed Friday morning after being struck by a box truck while crossing the street at a Beacon Hill intersection, according to Seattle police.

The fatal collision occurred just before 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Beacon Avenue South and South Portland Street, prompting response from Seattle Police Department officers and Seattle Fire Department medics.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency medical response. Her identity has not been released pending family notification.

The 66-year-old box truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to police. Authorities have not indicated whether impairment or other factors contributed to the crash.

Seattle Police Department’s Traffic Collision Unit has taken over the investigation, with detectives working to reconstruct the circumstances that led to the fatal impact. The intersection was closed to traffic during the initial investigation phase.

The incident marks another pedestrian fatality in Seattle, where traffic safety advocates continue pushing for improved crosswalk visibility and vehicle speed reduction measures in residential areas.

Beacon Avenue South serves as a major north-south arterial through the Beacon Hill neighborhood, carrying significant vehicle traffic between downtown Seattle and southern areas. The intersection with South Portland Street is located in a mixed residential and commercial area.

Investigators are requesting public assistance in the case. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the Traffic Collision Unit at 206-684-8923.

The Seattle Department of Transportation regularly evaluates high-accident intersections for safety improvements, including enhanced lighting, signal timing adjustments, and crosswalk enhancements.

Pedestrian safety remains a priority for city officials as Seattle works to achieve Vision Zero goals of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries.
