Seattle’s Eastside just became a whole lot more connected. Sound Transit officially opened the Downtown Redmond Link Extension this past weekend, and it’s already making waves across the region. The long-anticipated project adds two brand-new stations to the Eastside’s light rail system — making commuting, visiting parks, and shopping in Redmond easier than ever.
The extension is part of Sound Transit’s expanding 2 Line, which will eventually run all the way from Downtown Seattle through Mercer Island and Bellevue, ending in Redmond. As of now, here’s what’s live and ready for passengers:
- Marymoor Village Station – Located near Marymoor Park, King County’s largest and most popular park. This station offers easy access to outdoor events, concerts, and bike trails.
- Downtown Redmond Station – Nestled in the heart of Redmond’s retail and residential center, perfect for commuters and weekend visitors alike.
This segment adds 3.4 miles of new rail to the 2 Line and marks a big step toward improving Eastside transit access.
Trains on the Redmond extension currently run every 10 minutes between 5:30 AM and 9:30 PM, seven days a week. That means less waiting and more flexibility for Eastside commuters, students, and anyone just heading out for a day in the city.
In addition to the stations, new infrastructure like pedestrian bridges and trail connections around Marymoor Park have opened, thanks to collaboration with King County Parks. Whether you’re biking in or walking from a nearby neighborhood, it’s now easier (and safer) to access light rail.
This extension is just the beginning. Sound Transit is still on track to connect more of Seattle to the Eastside — including future plans for service to West Seattle, Ballard, and beyond. Earlier this year, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell signed an executive order to accelerate transit expansion across the Puget Sound region.
As Sound Transit’s network continues to grow, expect new opportunities to live car-free — or at least car-light — in the years to come.
