A fire that began in a ground-floor garage spread through all three floors of a Puyallup townhome Friday night, displacing five residents and prompting a second-alarm response.

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue crews responded to the Wynstone Townhomes in the 5600 block of 121st Street East just before 10 p.m. following a 911 call. The complex is located east of Canyon Road, approximately one mile south of State Route 512 in the Summit neighbourhood.

Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the roof of the three-storey unit. The fire had originated in the ground-floor garage and rapidly spread to the second and third floors, requiring command staff to request a second alarm due to the heavy fire involvement.

The response included nine fire engines, three medic units, and seven command vehicles. Crews conducted a thorough search of the burning structure but found no occupants inside.

The fire was brought under control by 10:38 p.m. and remained confined to the single apartment unit.

Following suppression efforts, firefighters began overhaul operations to locate any remaining pockets of flames or embers in walls, ceilings, and floors. Emergency crews remained on scene until 2 a.m. to prevent rekindling.

The Red Cross is assisting the five displaced residents with temporary housing arrangements. No injuries were reported among residents or emergency responders.

The Pierce County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze, which required approximately 40 minutes to bring under control from the initial aggressive attack.
