Seattle-based data management company Qumulo is expanding into Europe, announcing the launch of a new software research and development and customer success hub in Cork, Ireland, that is expected to create 50 jobs over the next three years.

Chief Technology Officer Kiran Bhageshpur said the Irish city was a natural fit for the company’s ambitions. “Cork was the obvious choice for us to build a team focused on leveraging AI to help businesses manage global-scale data infrastructure,” Bhageshpur said. Qumulo joins a cluster of Seattle-area technology companies with a presence in Cork, including Amazon and F5. Apple recently announced a new Cork office with capacity for up to 1,300 employees.

The expansion comes as Qumulo works to sharpen its position in an increasingly competitive field of AI-driven data management. The company was founded in 2012 by the engineering team behind Isilon Systems, which was acquired by EMC for $2.25 billion in 2010, and has long been a significant player in Seattle’s storage and cloud sector. Qumulo raised a $125 million Series E funding round in 2020, giving it a valuation of $1.25 billion at the time. The company navigated significant turbulence in 2022, including layoffs as it refocused on a path toward profitability.

Now under the leadership of CEO Douglas Gourlay, Qumulo is positioning itself around the growing global demand for what the industry calls AI-ready data infrastructure, betting that the Cork hub will anchor its next phase of international growth.
