On Friday, May 30, 2025, the Seattle Police Department responded to a critical incident involving an officer-involved shooting in the Belltown neighborhood. At approximately 12:30 p.m., officers on patrol near 2nd Avenue and Battery Street observed a man suspected of engaging in illegal drug activity. The area, known for recurring narcotics-related incidents, has remained a hotspot for street-level drug transactions and related safety concerns, prompting heightened surveillance and response from law enforcement.

As officers attempted to contact the suspect, he immediately fled on foot, leading police on a short pursuit through the downtown area. During the chase, the suspect reportedly pulled out a handgun. In response to the imminent threat posed by the armed individual, one of the officers discharged their service weapon. Despite a shot being fired, the suspect was not struck by the bullet. Officers continued the pursuit and were able to apprehend the man shortly thereafter without further incident.

Following the arrest, officers recovered the suspect’s firearm at the scene, confirming that the individual had been armed during the pursuit. After being taken into custody, the suspect began complaining of chest pains. Emergency medical personnel from the Seattle Fire Department were called to the scene to evaluate his condition. He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital for further assessment. Upon medical clearance, authorities expect the suspect to be booked into King County Jail.

The Seattle Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident, led by its Force Investigation Team, which handles all cases involving the use of force, especially those involving firearm discharges. The Office of Police Accountability and the Office of Inspector General are overseeing the investigation, in accordance with department policy, to ensure full transparency and proper conduct.

As part of standard protocol, the officer who discharged their weapon has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The Seattle Police Department has also announced that video footage related to the incident will be reviewed and made public within 72 hours, in line with its commitment to openness and public accountability.

The incident reflects ongoing challenges in addressing criminal activity in high-risk neighborhoods like Belltown, and highlights the complex decisions law enforcement officers face when dealing with potentially armed suspects. The case remains under active investigation. Members of the public are encouraged to monitor official updates from the Seattle Police Department for further information.
