U.S. Cellular Layoffs in Washington: 86 Jobs Affected Ahead of T-Mobile Acquisition

U.S. Cellular has announced plans to lay off 86 employees in Washington state, according to a filing with the Washington State Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) system. The layoffs are scheduled to begin on June 2, 2025.

The workforce reduction comes as the Chicago-based telecom provider prepares for a $4.4 billion acquisition by T-Mobile, a deal first unveiled in May 2024. As part of the transition, U.S. Cellular is expected to cut approximately 4,100 jobs nationwide—a significant restructuring effort amid ongoing changes in the wireless communications sector.

Despite the job cuts, U.S. Cellular has communicated to state officials that many of the affected workers in Washington may be offered new roles within T-Mobile. The potential reassignments are intended to ease the transition as the two companies align operations.

The acquisition deal includes select wireless spectrum assets and is still awaiting regulatory clearance. If approved, the merger will expand T-Mobile’s coverage footprint, particularly in rural areas where U.S. Cellular has a strong presence. The move aligns with T-Mobile’s strategy to increase service availability in underserved markets and strengthen its competitive edge in the national telecom landscape.

These U.S. Cellular layoffs in Washington reflect broader industry trends as telecom companies consolidate and restructure to adapt to changing technology demands and consumer behaviors.
