Renton police are searching for a suspect who shot a 57-year-old woman during an attempted purse robbery Friday evening after she used an ATM.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting around 6:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Burnett Avenue South. The victim had just completed an ATM transaction when a suspect attempted to steal her purse.

During the struggle over the purse, the suspect took the bag and shot the woman before fleeing the scene. She was transported to a hospital for treatment, with her condition not immediately available.

Witnesses described the suspect as a Black man in his 20s wearing red clothing on both his upper and lower body. The suspect has not been located.

The investigation remains active, with authorities stating they will release additional details as they become available.

The incident adds to concerns about ATM safety in the region, where users are vulnerable during transactions, particularly during evening hours when visibility is reduced and fewer witnesses may be present.

Renton police encourage ATM users to remain aware of their surroundings, use machines in well-lit areas with high foot traffic when possible, and consider alternative transaction methods during evening hours.

Anyone with information about the shooting or suspect is urged to contact Renton Police Department.
